Sunday 2nd June – walk/bird watching ***** Minsmere - sunny
We went to Levington for breakfast pastries. Went to pick Dan and Jay up at
the flat and went to Minsmere for the day. Dan and Jay are already members
of the RSPB and we were going to join when we went in but because the lady
who deals with joining was busy the man said we could go through and sort
it out on the way out. We had the best day :) Walked into the first hide,
sat down and very quickly afterwards saw our first Bittern :) It put on a
fantastic show and was out in the open for a long time. When that one
started to head for the reeds another one appeared! Other people in the
hide said they had never seen that before. It was great to hear them
booming too :) While this was going on we saw several Marsh Harriers, male
and female, a Hobby, a great white Egret and a cuckoo landed in a tree
right next to the hide! We moved on eventually to walk round the first
loop, calling in at all the hides, the visitors centre to go to the loo and
watch the smaller birds on the feeders then went round the second loop
which goes along the beach for a while. We saw Avocets, baby seagulls
(which were very cute and spotty), coots, moorhens and goslings. We also
saw red deer and a water vole. What a brilliant day! The weather was
lovely but it was a little bit chilly at times. Although we have been to
Minsmere several times we have never been to the bird reserve and were very
impressed. As we took so long to go round we got back to the visitor
centre and it was shut so we didn’t pay and we didn’t join!!! Will
have to sort out our membership on line. Drove back to the flat and had a
nice evening eating pizza and chips and helping with a box of chocolates!
